Does anyone know if the axles from an early 80s boxy wagon will fit a '93 Caprice Wagon? I planned a posi upgrade to an '89 Caprice wagon at one time and sold the car before I completed the project. Now I've got the complete hub to hub unit haunting the back yard and I'd like to make what use of it I can. If this isn't the right topic list for this question, please let me know so I can move it to the appropriate location.

You will lose ABS, the 89 doesn't have it. Also, there is a break in years somewhere close to that 89 where older cars will have 28 spline axles, and different lugs (imperial instead of the M12x1.5) from the 93. Your speedometer will be wrong if the ratio is different (and since that 89 came behind a 140hp Olds 307, I'll bet it's different).

It will bolt in, though...

Does anyone know if the rear axle housing from an early 80s boxy wagon will fit a '93 Caprice Wagon? How 'bout the axles? I planned a posi upgrade to an '89 Caprice wagon at one time, bought the rear assembly complete but sold the car before I completed the project. Now I've got the complete hub to hub unit haunting the back yard and I'd like to make what use of it I can on my NewToMe '93.

I neglected to count splines or measure axles when I replaced rear brakes,  bearings and seals last year. I'd already put about 4K post- purchase miles on the car when I got a chance to swap into some inexpensive GM pickup wheels from the same year and found the RS brake shoe installed backwards and a leaking bearing seal on the left. I reassembled with stock parts before I found out about the wheel bearing sets that move the axle wear point but by then I'd run out of time to R&R; I noticed more movement at the axle than I'd like on reassembly so I'm expecting to need one or more in the not too distant future.

Did you replace the axle when you did the bearings? If not, you probably need an axle. The left axle is noted to wear out faster than the right. The antilock brakes are more of a PITA then they are worth. I have disabled the ones on my 91, and I can outbrake the antilocks, even in the wet. If you are in the snow belt, you should keep the antilocks, just because snow is different than just wet.

I didn't replace the axle when I detected the side play (r. side not the left it turns out) for the reason stated but I still don't know:

1. If the axles from the boxy will fit the '93
2. If the hub to hub housing will fit the '93
3. Finally: where's the ABS rear axle sensors on the '93? I didn't see a ring or a sensor so you're gonna have to tell me where it is on the rear axle.
