Anybody ever seen tan spraypaint around the door handles under the wood?

To my knowledge its under all of them. Its also a good way to hide imperfections in the "wood."

The woodgrain print had completely bleached out..... Goodbye wood!

Andebe you are correct.
When the cars were on the assembly line they shot a quick shot of paint around the door handles to cover the gap between the vinyl and the door handle. As you can see from the picture it is only around the door handle. The vinyl does not cover up to the door handle. There is a small gap.
On the Caprice wagons they don't even color match the door handles.

That's correct - they also shot a quick shot of paint around the gas door and on the tailgate around the trim where the license plate sits... I was surprised when I "removed" wood years ago from my old wagon and found tan graffiti on several spots around the car. But the paint looked like a brand new car underneath there...
