can start car without key

95 rmw, 260k.

as the title says, my vehicle will start without a key inserted, vats will light up then flash but car runs normally. sometimes even with the key inserted vats light will illuminate and Ill have to screw with the key a bit. do I need a new ignition switch? help appreciated...

No key in the ignition is a bonus in the cold weather leaving the car running with the doors locked,.

Had an old Chevy Blazer. Kept it running with the doors locked during the summer.
kept the AC on.

Might be a little bit of temptation for a thief, but at least your vehicle is cold/warm and waiting for your to come back.

You need a quick disconnect steering wheel if you are going to allow the car to run with the doors locked, just in case someone decides that it would be a good idea to take it for a joy ride. Without a steering wheel, it is a lot harder to steal. The steering wheel is an awfully big key to exchange for the regular key. You will get some looks and comments if you are carrying the steering wheel in the mall.

From my experience these issues can become a problem down the road may want to carry a lock cylinder and proper VATS key for your car.

My 91 Olds did the same thing. I just left it alone for the 45k I owned the car. Why create projects for your self? Seriously, no one will know it'll start withouth a key, so no worries about anyone taking it. Just don't leave the doors unlocked when unattended.
