| I'm talking with a Pluck-Your-Part yard in phoenix about rear differentials out of two RMW's that they have and the SPID codes are unfamiliar to me..... They are GM8 and G67 from a 93 RMW and G80 and G67 from their 96 RMW.... I know that G80 is posi, but I'm uncertain what ratio a g67 is and I'm assuming that GM8 is an open rear... | |

| The G67 is not relevant to the ratio. GM8 is the ratio. It is the 2.56 that is not compatible with rebuilding to a higher numerical ratio. You do not state the ratio GM? GU? on the 96. | |

| Thanks Fred! I'm referring to a FSM for a 91 OCC and it only refers to ratios GU2 and GU5 which is a less than complete menu for these wagons. I had the wrecking yard on the phone and asked for "G" codes. I realized after posting that G67 is the air-ride. I asked specifically about GU codes when he called me back.....His 93 wagon was the GM8 with no G80......His 96 wagon was a GU5 (3.23) and G80 (posi) so that's going to be the one I want...... | |

Correct, the 96 never came with GU5. They were GM9 or GM8. The junk yard guy probably got them backwards, because the 93 never came with a GM8.

| Hmmm...... If we make a deal, I'll hafta be certain I get the one I want.....I had considered getting a running wagon for it's entire drivetrain and so transporting everything I'd need for my swap could be accomplished more easily......Then the reality of the guilt of getting rid of the leftovers set in.... Happy (in a way) that this JY has pieces I can buy without the guilt, but also sad to see these cars wind up in a JY instead of being loved and appreciated! I'm trying to formulate a specific plan to build my 69 chevy 108 windowless van.... I have been strongly considering an L05 drivetrain, but I'm also considering the possibility of a mid-nineties 454/4L80e pickup/burb drivetrain...... I most likely will set the engine rearward 18 inches and mounted on centerline (instead of right of center).....Initially, I'll probably use a carb and HEI (for the simplicity), but eventually I'll try to employ the electronic engine management in order to eliminate carb heat soak problems these vans are known for, eliminate gas smells, improve mileage and driveability, etc.....The van is basically going to be a 70's time machine! | |

| Up to 95 (gen V), the 454s came with flat tappet cams, 96 (Gen VI) and later have roller tappets. There are a lot of aftermarket heads available for any 454s. The 8.1L (2000? and on) is an orphan. Only one company makes aftermarket parts for it, and they are expensive. There is a 1000 cfm injection system for a 454 on the Tampa Craigslist auto parts for cheap. It is for the oval port heads.
If you go to a set of aluminum heads, you need the ARP 135-3703 bolt set. Jegs has then on Amazon for $120.

| If you head to the Pick A Part in phoenix, can you take a few photos of the wagons?

| Bob- Heres the CL ads: http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ptd/5058394577.html http://phoenix.craigslist.org/evl/ptd/5060005082.htmland very helpful on the phone! Looks like there are some good parts (but I didnt ask about gas tanks) Fred---Great 454 info!.....I had been thinking 94-95 because I want a 4L80 and I'm somewhat becoming comfortable with TBI.... I have a 94 Crewcab Dually and love It! The idea of top end interchangeability is important because I'll probably want to get the thing running with a carb (for simplicity sake) and SLOWLY develop a Mega-Squirt system for it... Actually, I've got an old 454 short-block on an engine stand..... Hmmm... | |
