I drive the Roadmaster for the same reason that most old people did... the sweet Buick ride. Stock suits me fine.

The ride was a bit too mushy and bouncy though and I saw a deal on the Moog CC623s that some seem to love so I gave them a try, thinking that my 20 yr old springs were shot.

Now the ride is a bit stiffer than I would like but my wife loves them. It sets the car up just enough higher that it is much easier for her to get in and out of. She loves them.

Oh no!

Here is the follow up. Is there a spring that could be put in the front to raise the nose up a bit to match the rear and still preserve or even improve the cushy ride? We drive like old people (yup, I'm old) so extreme handling capabilities aren't needed. I do have standard Monroe shocks on the front.

Btw I'm rolling on 735/75 R15 tires. It looks good a touch higher. The increased height puts my wife's arthritic knees in the perfect spot for entry and exit.

With a 60" diameter tire, do you use a ladder ?

Guessing you mean 235/75, which is half an inch taller, or 1/4" raise. If you really find your car too low you could go with Moog 9C1 springs.

You will have to put a small shim in the camber/caster stack .030 per half inch of lift for the new springs, to compensate for the positive camber.

Is this worth doing or am I better off living with it as is?

Thank you, and Happy Wagonfest!

You can swap the front springs in a couple of hours on a Saturday if you DIY and REALLY feel the need to level/raise the car.

Really not that hard.

Compress the spring, undo the castle nut for the spindle on the lower control arm, drop it out of the way, insert new spring (indexed properly between the two holes on the LCA), tighten castle nut, replace cotter pin, enjoy.

You will most likely need to use a compressor with the install of the taller spring. Honestly, you are the first person I've seen in my 5 and a half years here who wanted a taller riding wagon. These are not low cars by any stretch.

Personally, I'd LITFA.

Well, I'm back from my towing trip with the CC623s. I miss the Buick ride so I'm going back to stock. The question is whether to replace them with the old springs or start over with new stock springs. If new, what Rock Auto part number would you recommend?

Thanks,

Do you think it sat lower with the old springs than it normally should have? How rusty are they?

Maybe you could find somewhere on the net the uncompressed length of the stock spring.. Then you could see if they have collapsed much from what they used to be.

I too have CC623's. When I drive with the whole family the ride quality is ok (2 dogs in the back), and they're a very good thing to have when towing. But when driving alone, they are a little harsh.

The original springs are 14.5" long and are rust free.

If the originals are 14.5" when uninstalled is that where they ought to be?

oe # moog 5417 install height 8.50 inches,load spec 1200 lbs, spring rate 157, free height 16.13

replacement # moog cc623 install height 11 inches, load 865 lbs, spring rate 206, free height 15.13
sounds like your springs are sacked out another option could be the sedan rear springs
moog # cc621 install height 12.75, load spec 640 lbs, spring rate 175, free height 16.70
they are right in the middle and may solve the harshness issue.

good luck

Thank you very much for the information. What does installed height and free height mean?

installed height is after its in the car, you stated 14.5 inches uninstalled
free height is standing on the floor like your old ones
new oem stand 16.13 inches tall so yours appear to be short due to fatigue
I think the cc621 would be a happy middle ground for you comfort wise, yet enable you to occasionally load it up

The problem is solved. I let air out of the adjustable air shocks and as the rear end lowered the ride softened. This is wonderful. I now have the best of both worlds, as long as I can remember to adjust the shocks. Just eyeballing where the body is in relationship to the rim is all that it takes. The original automatically adjusting system was sweet but this is good enough.
