Air pump delete/header questions Empty
PostSubject: Air pump delete/header questions   Air pump delete/header questions Icon_minitimeTue Mar 13, 2018 8:56 am

Good morning!

I have a 1992 RMW with the 350 TBI. I have a couple of questions.

Will deleting the air pump and lines improve hp or fuel economy?

If I do delete the air pump, can I run headers? If so, what fits this car? Will I lose my EGR with headers?

Thanks!

""Will deleting the air pump and lines improve hp or fuel economy?""

No. The air pump setup allows the 3 way cat convertor to come up to temperature quickly under cold rich conditions, when unburned hydrocarbons are high. The magical reduction of pollutant products in the cat only occurs at very high honeycomb temperatures.

If your local laws permit it, removing the cat will make more improvement than headers.

Good to know.

Since this car is a pre-obd2 I can remove the cats without issue.

Thank you.

You can still run headers and keep EGR. I had a set of Hedman shorties on my car back when it was TBI powered, no AIR pump, and a functional EGR valve.

There's a different belt routing you have to make when the AIR pump is removed, and a different length. From memory (it's been a few years) I ran a 95.5" belt, so 5060955 at the part store.

Awesome! Just what I was hoping to hear!
I read about the belt rerouting and size difference so I'm good there.

Thank you

Either 95 or 96 inch belt will work. I used the 95 successfully. As mentioned it doess require a different routing path.

I had pictures, but refuse to pay photobucket keeping my pictures hostage.
