| I bought a 96 rmw. The windshield has started to delaminate on the passenger side. It is not significant yet. Is there a way to repair it, or to prevent it from progressing?
Thanks | |

| Sungate windshield?
Not much you can do. New ones are NLA unfortunately. Just have to hope you get lucky with a better used unit than what you have now.

| Nothing fixes these. What's happening is the coating inside the glass is breaking down. It's multiple layers. Here's a snippet from a company, Delta Kits, that explains a little better than I can: Pittsburgh Glass Works (PGW) produces the second type of solar glass and sells it under the Sungate trade name. According to PGW, "The Sungate windshield incorporates a multi-layer metal/metal oxide coating on the inboard surface of the outer glass". When Sungate windshields are damaged an air pocket may be formed between the coated layer of glass and the PVB layer. Depending on the extent of the damage, this air pocket may allow air and moisture to come into contact with the coating on the inside surface of the glass, causing a white ring or "halo" to appear. The halo is caused by the reaction between the air and solar coating. While these windshields are repairable, the milky colored halo will still be visible after the repair is completed. Drilling neither helps nor worsens this effect as it is due to a chemical reaction and not resin flow. | |

| That sounds like they can stop the progression, just can't restore the existing damage. That could work for me. | |

| That would work for me, the damage doesn't show from inside at all. Any recommendations who to call in n NJ?

| The posts referred to seem to address the delamination ring around a glass impact damage. Your problem is the more common edge delamination. Moisture gets in-between the glass "sandwich" and turns the plastic interlayer white.
Does anyone really know how to stop this type of delamination from spreading?

One whack with a crowbar and a defect-free windshield from a donor car should do it.

| the lami layer inside of lami glass can not be replaced. the lami has separated from the glass layers and can not be reattached. most commonly this is caused by moisture after a break or chip; or from heat. heat will make it worse and cold will not make it bond. sorry for your loss. | |
