| Changed the oxygen sensor, a little better but still either dies in drive or runs at 1500 rpm.

| Could it be that I installed the tps wrong?

| The TPS fits on a tang on the end of the throttle plate shaft. | |

| But it is offset a little right? Just looking in a manalysis to see if I got it on right. When I took it off it snapped off. | |

| There is a little tension on the TPS to keep any play out of the connection. | |

| When I installed mine I had to turn it left to get on the shaft and the right to align the screw holes. Does that sound right? The manual is quite vague | |

| I have not had one off for a while, but that sounds correct.
The throttle plate shaft rotates counter clockwise to accelerate when looking at the TPS. The preload should press on the TPS .so that it follows the shaft tightly

| So I tested the tps today. Voltage to and ground is OK. When I back probed the plug with the ignition on and throttle closed it was reading 5v. Which is supposed to be the value at wide open throttle. Guess I'm replacing it tomorrow. | |

| Well I got it running well enough to drive it to the closest shop. The guy hooked it up to the computer and it turns out my motor is really tired. It's only producing 8.8 in vacuum and had too much blow by. I can get a 350 from a friend but I don't know if it would work with the 305 computer. Any ideas? | |

| I may be able to get a 350 computer. Make sure the 350 is a single RMS with the same type heads as your 305. If you have different heads, the intake manifold will not fit. You must also use the original style distributor, or it will not fit under the cowl.

| So I found a 91 caprice motor in good running condition. It should be a direct swap, or would I need anything from the caprice?

| You need to get it cheap, and know how many miles are on it. I believe all 91 Caprice wagons got the 305, but check to be sure. The spid on the D pillar, or on the trunk lid will have LO3. If it has LO5 it is a 350, and needs the computer, and should have the donor spark control module.
It should be a direct swap if it has not been tinkered with. You still need the original style distributor. While you are swapping engines check the wiring bundle that goes under the front of the engine. It often has had all of the insulation fused, and wires could touch (this could be your problem).

| It's a 91 caprice sedan. I never checked the spid though it is a 305. 200k km but I did hear it start and it was running well. I'm not a bit of a jam since it's my daily driver now. I'm actually having a hard time finding a shop to do re and re. Ive done engine swaps before but I don't have the garage space now and would have to do it in my driveway. The motor will cost me $600 Cdn and the guy will pull it out as well. I get to keep everything that is bolted to the motor as well. | |

| The price seems reasonable. I would consider putting a new rear main seal in it before installing it. I can not help with an installer. Usually the price of installation is about $500 USD. These are not all that difficult to install, but if the wiring that goes under the front of the engine is faulty, your installation will be a little more difficult. I have yet to find a pretty wire bundle under the front of the engine. It is a little time consuming to replace each individual wire under there. There are about 8 or 10 wires of various colors. If you get the wiring with the donor engine, you could fix that before installation, but you must get all of the wiring, including the part that passes through the firewall on the right. I believe the engine wiring is the same for all 91 models, but if you have the electronic climate control, it may be different from the Caprice harness. The wiring is different from the 91 to 92.
The part under the engine is the same for both, and you could make a patch cable from one side to the other, and install it while the engine is out.
