Used to use a set screw, easy to fix. No setscrew on my 1994 (setscrews are ugly). A heavy spring steel clip holds the mirror to window mount So reattach fallen mirror what to do? I found you can pry the metal mount out of the spring clip. I then think why do they have these metal punchouts, it will make it much harder to slide down, and could never slide it off again. I used my dremel and ground them off. Reglued the mount to the glass Greased the spring clip And slid the mirror on. It is plenty tight, it wont go flying off. Pics
Other thing, the glue blob was still attached to the glass. So I used an instant glue. Used a 400 grit paper to sand lightly the metal mount. Cleaned off glue blob with alcohol, (made it a little sticky) Will see if it holds on.

Loctite sells a kit just for mounting the mirror button to the windshield. Have used plenty of them over the years and they work just fine.
Basically a razor blade to remove old glue, a cleaner and primer wipe and a little bottle of adhesive.

I have a kit, but why waste it if the super glue works ok. And the special glues do work fine, but they also do let go, or none would have to fix them. So its really a question of how long the glue lasts.

""super glue works ok.""
Others might have had better experiences, but regular super glue deteriorates in sunlight.

LOL. Why not use the kit if you have it? Not aware of them being collectors items.
We have to fix them because the cars are reaching 3 decades of use and nothing lasts forever.
As for poor design, companies have been gluing those little buttons to glass for a very long time.

Yup, fell off this am when I moved the mirror. The poor design is not using a screw to hold the mirror on, IMO. How are you guys removing the metal base from the mirror?

Safelight will glue mirror buttons on for free. UNLESS there is a little chip pulled out of the glass. Sometimes, even then, they will glue it on below the original spot.
If a chip pulls out of the glass, you have to be very careful about applying pressure to that area. It provides a place where the tempered glass can unlock and shatter.

Yeah, I don't like that silly little clip either.
I squeeze it with a pair of pliers and slide the button free with my thumb.

Ok if the whole thing is in your hand. What if you want to remove a mirror from the window and the button is still glue on? Start prying between glass and mirror, something is going to break I think. It is why I ground off the tabs, so I can slide the mirror off if needed.

I push the clip in with a screwdriver and slide the mirror off.
