Jay just informed me that pre-94 RMWs had roof racks that sit flush with the vista window. I'd like to purchase 2 sets of black ones.

The Roadmaster crossbars are shiny. You need OCC crossbars for the black ones.

and the TBI cars only came with one, not two.

Forum member Skipper has one shiny one and one LT' one on his RMW and is looking to get another LT1 one for a set. maybe you can trade him. (I think he;s on ISSF more often as he started as an Impala guy). I had this discussion with him yesterday and told him I was on the lookout.

The OCC and 91-93 RMW roof racks may not fit on the 94-96 cars. I have an RMW rack which is aluminum and chrome. $50 shipped. The OCC racks are hard to find. You could have the RMW rack powder coated.

I have a 91-93 Roadmaster cross bar on our 94 Roadmaster. It fits perfectly.

Well, now we know that the 91-93s fit the 94-96s. The RMW bars are still aluminum and chrome, and would have to be painted/powder coated for black.

There is a small strip that goes over the edge of the rack in the front to support the load there. I believe the load rating is pretty low. It is mainly for show.

On my 92, I always slid the bar back, and rested things on the lip behind the glass and the cross bar. Then, used my ratcheting straps to hold things down. Never had an issue, and there has been LOTS of stuff up there, sometimes on long road trips.

You can always swap back to the tower mounts if you need them for something. I took my mounts off my Caprice for my Florida trip, and I think I will leave them in the garage unless I am picking something up. That is one advantage with the 91-93 RMW rack: it slides up out of the way, and looks great when you are not using it.

I recently saw a picture in a GM brochure of the roof rack in use. They show the cargo net being hooked into the holes behind the vista roof in front and the single crossbar in back.

Honestly, we only used the roof rack of the boxy wagon once in three or four years, but those damn roof racks whistled every single time we drove anywhere. I figure that we were a pretty typical user.
