One of the local club members is blaming the closing not just on ricers but on all the newer cars. He's saying it should just be for older cars. 20-years and older...
I really loved the "bring what you got" aspect of the cruise-in. While I have a 67 GTO in my garage, it's a LONG way from cruise-worthy, and I enjoy putting my LT1 '96 Roadmaster wagon, 77 Buick and 88 Cutlass in the show. None are really "classics", but I get positive comments on those cars and it's frankly just fun to be in the show.
I'm not a big fan of ricers or lowriders, and understand the concerns of the local business owners, but hate to single anyone out. And as a huge car nut in general I enjoy seeing the new Corvettes, Mustangs, Challengers, Camaros and such at the show. If you love cars and can afford the payments, more power to you and pull up a chair.
As for the teenagers, if they are just there to blast music and peel out, then yes, that's not why we're here, but if they have a real interest in cars then I welcome them. With all the tree-hugging car-hating liberal people out there now, this hobby is in a lot of danger of going away if we alienate the kids.
I really enjoy showing off my toys to people of all ages, and as long as they are respectful of our cars and are there to enjoy them and not cause trouble, then any "car person" is fine with me.
One of my favorite things about living in this city is the large car-culture and come-as-you-are attitude. I saw that in our cruise-in and hope we can find a new home for it where everyone is still welcome.
