PostSubject: Undercoating dissolving door seal glue?   Undercoating dissolving door seal glue? Icon_minitimeThu Aug 20, 2009 8:54 pm

I'm having a problem with my '94 RMW where the door seal that runs along the bottom edge is coming off at the ends. It seems to have gotten worse after a few years of spraying with Rust Check, and anti-corrosion oil product used as a once-a-year undercoating.

Has anyone else had the problem of these seals coming off? Only my front doors, but both of them. It looks like they are shaped as if they are supposed to just grab the bottom edge of the door, but I just don't know. Is there adhesive involved?

Has anyone taken these off and reapplied them?

Makes sense. All four seals are intact on my non-coated rusty 92. All four seals are missing on my Krown coated rust free 94...

Crown is oil based product and will degrade any not-special rubber and some plastics. Actually, condition of rubber gaskets is got much worse on my Toyota which is coated by Crown every year.

They are held on by clamping pressure only. Easy to remove and replace. OCCs go on under the lower edge of the side trim.

Yep, Carwell (Crown) definitely has distorted these seals on my wagons. The two that don't get this stuff sprayed on them do not have this problem.

I wonder if there's an adhesive that will work? I was thinking of removing mine, cleaning all the oil off both sides, and using some super weatherstrip adhesive or something.

I wonder if doing the above would cause water to get held in the wrong place?

Further, I wonder what the issue is with running no seal here? My old '94 didn't have any of these seals and I never noticed a difference in road noise, etc.

I do notice road noise more on my 94 than my RMW (that has the seals). I'll put the seals on the Caprice in the spring and see if that makes the difference...

Yeah, Rustcheck is definitely distorting the seals. It's not a glue issue. They're literally deforming.
