i had a 92 roadie, it had tachometer in the cluster, my 96 doesnt, if i got the earlier cluster would it be a direct swap ???

nope

You'd be better off getting analog gauges from an F-body with a LT1.
It's been done on here, with photos.
Or, Flash Gumby got an a-pillar pod for a tach and gauges and got SWEET overlay, and reprogramed the PCM so he has an accurate 200MPH speedo (again pics are around here).
