Moved from the Craigslist section because I know that section gets cleared now and then. Original Thread: https://gmlongroof.4umer.com/t6986-low-miles-occ-in-nc

Mike, if the seller provides you the full VIN you could CompNine it and really get all the gritty details. Good news on the engine. Now see if it has the compass mirror and G67 load leveler. Looks like a great OCC!

Thank you for the GREAT TIP! Went to CompNine http://www.compnine.com/vid.php and now I REALLY can't wait to get the car. It FOR SURE has the 5.7 350 in it, and other than the basic cassette radio, it appears to be TOTALLY LOADED! 5.7, tow package, posi rear with a ratio better than my Roady had, auto headlights, compass mirror, and on and on! It even says it has the Vista Roof sunshades. I didn't even know that was an option on these. Was planning to hit the yards for a set. Very Happy

ALSO I think I know why the air cleaner bolts are rusty. I looked up Conway South Carolina, where the current owner got the car at the Estate Sale, and Conway is 15 miles from the beach. I know the car was garaged there, but salt air is salt air. It's not going to dry-air clean, but I can pretty up on the undersides if needed.

Can't wait for the road trip!

He says the flash made the carpet look lighter than it is. It's dark blue and there are no stains. Looks like I'll need some carpet floor mats for the car.

I didn't know that the OCC's didn't have door lights under the arm rests in the back doors. Wonder if I can snag some from a Roadmaster and add them. Not a big deal, but I like the lights! I do think the rear seat in the OCC looks better than the rear Roady seat. Does not look so flat. Nice!

5.7 TBI. I've got a lot of cleaning to do under here. The rusty nuts on the air cleaner are driving me bonkers. Can't wait to clean under the hood! Also I see it's been retrofitted to 134A on the a/c, but looks like the stock compressor...not a good idea. Bet I'll be doing a/c work in the future. He said it blows cold....we'll see if the compressor is quiet.

Mkie,
Congratulations. Your dilligent search paid off. The lighted vanity mirrors, compass, vista shades, leather, etc are nice options. When do you go pick it up?
My OCC had 51,000 on it when I got it this spring. I now have 59,100. Enjoy it!!

I invited my Dad along for a father-son road trip. School started today or I would have taken my oldest son too.

We fly out of Austin this coming Saturday morning and land in Fayetteville NC around 5pm. The seller is picking us up in the Olds. Can't wait!

We're still up in the air on what way to come home. If we stay north we'll be coming through Memphis and then visiting family in Arkansas. BUT we're considering going south and staying at a family friends place on the gulf in Destin Florida, and then going through New Orleans for some oysters and beer before coming back through Houston to Austin.

Either way, we're taking our time coming back home. I took off Tuesday, so with the holiday on Monday we'll have three full days to drive 1300 miles. Since we''ll be driving a rolling living room, I'm really looking forward to the drive. Gotta love these big old cars, and I've SO missed having one!

Oh and mine will have just under 60K miles when we get home too. Hope to hold on to this one for a long time!

Oh and this is kinda funny. When I looked at that radio pic, all that popped in my head was that it was the same radio my '93 S-10 came with. Well I'm commuting in my '88 Cutlass Supreme this week and this morning on the way to drop the kids off, Eddie, my oldest, said Hey Dad, isn't that the same radio that's in the new wagon??

Ha...ummm, yeah it is. Ha. The face of the radio in the Cutlass is gloss black, not flat black, other than that, it's the same one. Funny I never made the connection...but it sure looked familier. Smile

Mike,
I love my OCC. I just had my windows tinted. Looks nice. The radio/cassett player works well and I bought 60 Cassettes from an old DJ at a car swap meet. Today I am going to order new shocks. Bilstien HDs. The only thing I don't like about our cars, is how little the damn insurance companies value them. I have a 1965 VW insured for agreed value of $10,000 and no one will insure my OCC for that.
Well I drove my 1958 Cadillac for 10 years with out an accident. I put 95 K on it.
Have a great trip. Oh and please clean up that engine compartment. Pictures!!!

Yep that option list tickled me to death. It was like Christmas, way beyond what I was expecting, especially since it doesn't have a hitch on it. All I'm going to tow is my little lake boat and the motorcycles now and then, and this thing was ordered with all the heavy-duty hardware so I could tow a travel trailer if I wanted too. Very cool!

I was suprised that with the F40 heavy-duty suspension and all the tow stuff that it doesn't have variable-ratio steering. I don't mind no-feel steering...heck it's a luxury car, but it suprised me a bit.

Oh and I wonder what my mileage on the trip will be with those 3.23's. I was expecting the TBI to get a little better mpg than my LT1 did in the Roady, but the Roady only had 2.93's. It got around 24 on trips. We shall see!

At texas speeds your mileage may differ but I will bet on about 23 to 25 using the cruise and
loaded.

Yes sir just about the first thing on my list once it's home is tinting the windows. I want the dark blue interior to stay dark blue!

Oh and personally I'm glad these are undervalued, so I could buy another one! I will say about 2-3 years ago when I bought my Roady, these cars could be found cheaper and with less miles. I've looked DAILY since last April when I sold my Roadmaster and all the cars I found either had more miles than I wanted or were priced out of my budget. Really glad this one popped up, just wish it was closer.

Oh and the SECOND thing on my to-do list is a top-to-bottom clean-up and detailing.

Lots of trip pics to come! Can't wait!

Good to know!

Hey off THIS topic but read about your key issue. Didn't something like this happen to you once before, like a few years back?

I think the lock cylinder is bad, but you have to pull the column apart to fix it. You really need some special tools to do that, but GM columns were busted in so many stolen cars years back that lots of mechanics became wizzes at fixing them. Find a good local shop. Should not cost much!

Good luck!

Haha, yep with my luck it'll come into Texas on Saturday when I'm supposed to fly out, and delay me, and then it'll turn east and I'll end up driving my new toy through a 3-day rain squall!! affraid

I'm going to try to think positive!!

As for the blue OCC in Georgia, I sure wish you or someone else on here would grab it. Price is great for the miles and condition. The main reason I focused on the white one over the blue was the 10K lower miles, ands the colors which match my Cutlass exactly, which will be cool in my driveway and at the local car shows parked side-by-side.

The blue car looks gorgeous, SOMEONE SAVE IT.

I think everyone on here can tell how excited I am. I can't sleep either, and work is dragging by... I must be a true dork like my wife says, getting all worked up over a 20-year-old station wagon. Very Happy I just can't wait to pull into work in it and park between the BMW's and Lexus' again. My dang Dodge Ram is invisible in the parking lot. My Cruiser will stand out! Laughing

Here's how to do it: consider it a good way to find out if your new wagon find is watertight.

81X11 wrote:

Left unchecked, I'd probably have my entire property filled with "whales", boxy wagons and "bathtubs". There's a light blue OCC around here in not-too-bad condition, but I haven't got the money or a good place to keep it. I'd like to find a 1A2 wagon for no good reason at all.

I already have far too many cars.

You're not alone. When I realized that I was finally going to have a B-body and that it would be a wagon no less...oh boy. Time passed so slooooooowly. bounce I couldn't help but think that something would happen at the last minute to axe the whole deal, or that someone would offer more than I had, or that the car dealer wouldn't hold up their end of the deal, or ??? . The night I went to get the car with my mother, she could have driven 100 miles an hour and we couldn't have gotten there fast enough!

If that means we're dorks, so be it. At least we'll be happy, wagon driving dorks. rabbit

The few times I've had mine to work, it's attracted a lot of attention and comments. It brings back memories of the station wagons that people had or rode in when they were younger. While going down the road, and at intersections, I've noticed people staring at it. A few people have approached me at the gas station to talk about it as well, including one person who said their friend had a white wagon with the LT1.

But hey, you're getting there. It's Tuesday!

Tuesday is not Saturday. Evil or Very Mad

Tick...........Tock..........Tick...........................Toooocccckkkk....

Come on! Hahahaha.

Everyone here at work knew me by my white Roady wagon. When I told them I sold it I got all sorts of "selling out" and "trying to be normal" comments, especially when I showed up in the Ram...which blended in with the 40 other pickups in the lot...except mine was cleaner... Wink

I'll show them with the new Cruiser! I will not be a conformist! Ha!

We had an 80's-themed party offsite at a roller rink with work last year, and I brought the Cutlass with the T-tops off. Wore my old jean-jacket I've had forever too, and had all my 80's cassettes with me. Wasa huge hit. Everyone got their pics with my car, was pretty fun.

Sometimes it's cool to be the goofy one at work. Smile

Almost be worth driving to Fayetteville saturday just to see how fast you get off the plane. I can see it now, trying to explain to the TSA that the reason you're sweating and drooling and acting strange is a 20 year old wagon....

Cool car. Not sure what your plan is for the radio, but I think I have a 1.5 din cassette with equalizer you can have for the cost of shipping, provided I can find it. I just moved so it's more than likely packed away.

So we're letting the weather determine our route home. If the rain is north, we're going south, and vice-versa. I wish I knew for sure so I could locathe the U-Pull-It yards on the route!

And I'm sure the car will get cleaned multiple times on the way home. Can't travel in a dirty car!

For some reason the black paint used on the 91 center caps seems to hold up very well. However, only the pristine low miler 92's seem to actually still have the red intact. I actually used Testors model paint on mine and hand brushed the logo, came out pretty decent.

I may have a spare set of centers if you want to paint them yourself and keep those hidden away. Wink

Sitting there enjoying our cones, people started wandering over from the car show to admire, reminisce and ask questions about the wagon!

Oddly enough, I didn't see any BMWs, Accuras or pickup trucks drawing a crowd. Maybe if they came in DCM? Cool

Hahaha. I love it. It was always funny how much attention my Roady wagon got at the Cars and Coffee meets. I'd be parked next to some exotic thing and folks would walk by it and look at the wagon. Very Happy

Well here's the latest panic attack. I put my insurance on the Custom Cruiser today, e-mailed the seller a copy of the form and then called him to make sure he got the card.

He did.

He then asked if I was bringing license plates for the car. Ummm..no. In Texas the plates go with the car. Ditto the car I bought in California. I figured I'd use the plate on the car and have my insurance, the title, and a bill of sale for the trip home.

WELL the car has no plates. He titled it in his name, but it's not currently registered or inspected. He's basically kept the car in storage since buying it a year ago.

Question

SO I called the local title office here and just got back from giving the State of Texas $25 for a 30-day temp license plate to tape in the rear window.

OH and at the DMV they asked if I was driving through Mississippi. I said I might be. They said it could be a good idea to go around that state, because Mississippi does not recognize out of state temp tags, and might pull me over and ticket me.... Rolling Eyes

Good Lord. Nothing is easy. I decided to find out for myself and attempted to call the Mississippi DMV, but was told they along will all state offices are closed for the hurricane.

Ok then. Will try to Google it.

So....what's next?

Tiiiiccck.....Tooooccck.....Tiiickkk......Toooocccckkkk.

I guess I need to be happy that I could not have gone sooner. I would have had no plates when I landed, and that really would have been something to panic over. I would have been cop-paranoid the entire trip home.

Before I carry tools on the plane,I would hit up the local auto store, harbor freight or northern and
buy a cheap set and just always keep it in the wagon.Same thing with cleaning supplies as well!
I would be careful where I stayed and parked the wagon at night as well!

Figured I'd got buy a cheap tool set once we get the car and get on the road. Packing really light so I don't have to check bags on the airplane. Idiots charge $25 for checking a bag and $35 for additional bags. Such a ripoff. I remember when you could chack two bags for free....and they gave out more than peanuts on a flight too!

Also where you stay on the road means a lot and maybe pickup one of those cheap baby
monitors.Leave the monitor in your wagon and the reciever on wide open.If somebody
starts messing around the wagon, you get woke up fast and intervene or make a lot of
noise.Use to use the baby alarm trick all the time on the road.Car alarms get ignored or quickly
disarmed where as a baby alarm only wakes you up and allows you to take matters into your own hands!
Cant be too careful anymore!

Real easy. Pull the fuse box cover in the driver's door jamb. The FP fuse is in the front-most row, right in the center. The cover has a label that identifies them.

I agree! That damn thing is the Eighth Wonder of the World. EVERYONE who gets in the car for the first time says, "What's this?" and proceeds to pull it open. Rolling Eyes Luckily mine hasn't come loose but it'd be a great place for some kind of prank.

Now what could we put in there that would elicit affraid

Perhaps a sound module from one of those audio greeting cards. Razz

Chris your blue 91 OOC was always one of my favorites, and the miles you got out of it gives me hope for this one. It's going to be my daily driver, tow car for the boat, and family trip vehicle. I hate to put all those miles on such a nice clean low-mile car, but I'll keep it up in top shape! I wanted one to drive without worry....or as little worry as you can have on a 20-year-old car. I hope this is it!

Glad you like the pics and I CAN NOT WAIT to see the car this Saturday!

Watch it Mike, your head is beginning to swell again.Calm down and take deep breaths! At the rate you are going you will know more about this car BEFORE you even get to drive it than anyone
here.Since this car has been sitting quite a bit you should change the oil at the end of the first
day before the engine has a chance to cool off.Get rid of the crud and sludge that comes from
short trips and sitting for long periods.Just go with whatever oil you plan on using from now on
and NO additives.Wouldnt hurt to pick up a high quality serpentine belt just in case the current
belt is dry in spots and decides to give up somewhere in the middle of nowhere.

The seller was nice enough to take the car to a local shop for me. Wheel bearings have been re-packed and oil has been changed, and the belts, hoses, and other fluids were all checked and topped off. Will check the normal things myself when I get there, before the first big day on the road. Other than the Check Engine light coming on now and then, the car is supposed to be pretty solid.

I will most likely change the oil again as soon as I get it home, and also change the trans fluid and filter and the rear axle grease. For all I know both are 20-years-old.

Such fun.

TWO MORE WORK DAYS. Tick-Tock. Almost there!
