| Last weekend me and my buddy finally got around to swapping out the rear end in my '93 RMW. I went from a 2.73 peg leg to a 3.23 posi out of my old Caprice wagon. So ofcourse now my speedo reads faster than I am actually travelling (about 15 to 18% I believe). I look in my FSM and discover I need a purple 43 tooth driven gear to replace the 35 tooth one that's in there.
Here's the issue. Looking online it appears that there are 2 different Vehicle Speed Sensors for my car. One for 34 to 39 tooth speedo gears and one for 40 to 45 tooth speedo gears. Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to pull the VSS and gear from the donor car before I scrapped it.
Has anyone run into this issue? Do I need to swap the VSS? Anybody got one laying around?

| Yes, you do have to swap it out. I wasn't aware of the gear change too, good to know. You can still get them from the dealer or various parts places. Unfortunately, cheap they are not. When you go in, they will ask if you have a GU2 or GU5 on your SPID. I'm pretty sure GU5 is the 3.23 rear code and GU2 is the 2.73. | |

| Derek: I went the other way with the 91 and had no problems with the VSS itself. Did have to play around with the gears (anyone want a blue one?) but finally got to within 2%. Close enough. Mine had the 3.23s in it and I went back to 2.93. If you want I'll check the number of teeth tomorrow. Might even find the original that was in it.. If I can find them their yours. Bill | |

But a green (42 teeth) or Dark Grey (44 teeth) would be close enough. The speed sensor I need is white which is for a 40 to 45 tooth gear. I believe the one I have is the black one for a 34 to 39 tooth gear. Although I haven't pulled it out yet to check.

| Tell you what. Will look for all of them and send them up in a box. One has to be close. Bill | |

| I found that link earlier, that's where I found out about the 2 different speed sensors. Thanks though, it's good to know they are a reputable company.
I have checked the accuracy of my speedo with a GPS on flat ground and the speedo is reading about 20% fast. So through some calculations I think a 44 or 45 tooth gear is what I need. When I get a chance I'm gonna crawl under the car and see what gear and sensor is in there now. Then I will try to get the parts locally (when money permits).
If I can't find them around here I think I will give that place that Fred mentioned a try.
Thanks. | |

| Derek: Tried to PM you a couple of times to get an address to sent the gears to you but nothing happens. Do you have that setting turned off? Have a couple of gears if your still in need. Bill | |

| While we are on the subject of VSS gears, does anyone have a 41 tooth driven gear? I am going to change tire sizes, and I need a 41 tooth instead of the 44 that I have. | |

| If Derek's not interested, I'll take that gear. Gets me one step closer to my 3.23 swap! | |

| I put in a 42 tooth gear and it's close enough for now. I probably do need a 44 to get it perfect but I'm chasing an EGR problem right now trying to pass the damn Emissions test. So I think I will pass on the gear, if Mike is interested go ahead.
Thanks you very much for thinking of me though.

| Derek I am so sorry for not getting back to you on this. I dug the transmission out on the coldest day this winter only to find the part we discussed is not there.
I asked my friend and he said he removed it to see if that was what I needed to make the speedometer in the 95 read accurate. The 3:23 from my 91 is in the 95.
Knowing now what we didn't then ,he says he gave me that part back in a box of other parts for the 91 and I haven't been able to find it.
I haven't given up,I just need to move the wagon and my wifes car to get at the area where it may be.
I again appologize and it is yours if I find it. Lorne.

| No problem Lorne. I actually found the parts I needed about a month ago. I sent you a PM on here to let you know, but didn't get a response, not sure what happened there. My home computer has taken a dirt nap so I don't get online much right now.
Anyway, thanks for looking, I really appreciate it, but I don't need it anymore.

| Thats great news Derek. I couldn't believe it when I saw the empty hole where you said it was located.
I tell you what, when I get the t56 in and new gears, you can have these ones and the transmission if you want . Lorne.
