6" x 9" Speakers

Gents,

I have a dead 6" x 9" speaker in my '95RMW. All I can find are 4 Ohm speakers while mine are 8 Ohm. I even called a stero shop and they claim that 8 Ohm speakers are no longer available. Other than junk yard shopping, can I use the 4 Ohm speakers and solder/crimp in a 4 Ohm resistor inline?

Unless youre using after market amps,you shouldnt notice much,if any,sound quality difference.

Minor issue. maybe you'll need to readjust the front to rear fade to compensate for a change on volume.

you might check with your amp manufacturer, as running mixed can blow amps or amps in receivers. some are not rated for 4 to 8 either.

The ohm rating of a speaker is only at a fixed frequency, as it is an inductive device. A resistor in series won't accomplish what you are looking for. Two identical 4 ohm speakers in series will appear to the amp as a single 8 ohm. Two identical 8 ohm speakers wired in parallel will appear to the amp as a single 4 ohm speaker.

Yes, put a four ohm resistor in series and it'll be close enough. But, in my experience, factory radios will handle four ohm aftermarket speakers okay though.

I ordered a pair of DS18 MB69 350 speakers off Amazon.com. They are 6 x 9 8 Ohm speakers the only ones availble in this size and screw in pattern with 8 OHMS impeadance (sp). When I get them I will need to figure out which wire is positive. Drivers side are brown and yellow, passenger side dark blue and light blue.

hi skier, as a rule your darker color is neg, lighter pos. when color is same, black stripe is negative. if you have an aftermarket stereo you can double check the wiring.

I have a factory CD, Cassette tape radio that needs to be sent in because both CD and tape players are misbehaving. There is a company near Chicago that fixes radios. $125 per fix, at least late last year.

Maybe get it updated so it works with your portable device as well?

I was just looking into this issue for my own 95 wagon. I'm not up to date on the new trends in audio, Heck at home I still listen to vinyl my 30 year old stereo. I have a small collection of junk yard pulled gm 6x9's but they seem dry and brittle now and I'm sure will blow out soon after I put them in. 6 x 9's seem to vanish from stores here

I've got 2 dead rear 6" x 9"s. Anybody know what the wattage is on the factory ones?

The required wattage for the factory system is minimal, something like 20W is probably being conservative.

4 ohm speakers are fine, I replaced mine with some cheapo 3 way 6x9's from Amazon.
Kenwood KFC-6965S, they're rated at "400W" which is a total marketing BS number. They do sound better than the stockers, that's for sure.

Since they have a lower impedance, without getting all electrical engineery on everyone, basically they consume their rated power at half the volume setting as an 8 ohm speaker. So you'll get the same "volume" at a lower setting on the volume knob, and you will hit the point where things get distorted much sooner.

As others have pointed out, setting the fader properly will counteract this. Adding another 4 ohm speaker in series also would correct this, with the added benefit of giving you more surface area to push air with. Unfortunately there's no good spot to stick another pair of speakers, but if you built a box for them it might work.

Way over thinking it. Grab a pair of 6x9s, stick them in, and enjoy having a radio again.

4ohm or not - they'll be fine.

yup.  If you're using the factory head unit, just put a set of cheap 4 Ohm 6x9s.  Canadian Tire seems to have them on liquidation fairly frequently.   I've had good luck with amazon.ca as well, but availability vs the amazon.com site is hit or miss.
