| My spedo works sometimes, sometimes not. Cruise works when spedo works as does odometer. Usually it doesn't work when you first start out and then kicks in, may go for 100 miles or may work for 10 miles, no rhyme or reason. Thoughts? | |

| Either the VSS or the VSS buffer. The buffer is a lot less messy to replace. Be forewarned that removing the VSS will dump about 2 quarts of trans fluid out of the hole. What gear do you have in the rear? The 3.23 has a 40+ VSS, and the 2.73 has the 39- VSS.
It could also be a loose, or corroded connector on the VSS or buffer. I would try to clean the connectors before replacing either. The buffer should be the white module on top of the convenience center. It has two connectors. It is held on by two push pins like the ones that hold the covers over the retractors for the rear seatbelts.

| Thanks Fred, as soon as I get some other stuff out of the way of the lift I will check that out, checked out the vss and it appears to be working and couldn't find any bad connections but will will look closer. By the way I took piano lessons for 7 years and would be lucky to find middle C, but then again nobody will call me a mechanic either. My OCC has 235000 miles and is pretty much a survivor, got a few hail dents last spring but otherwise no rust or dents, just tons of fun.

| Mine is at 280K but has a newly built (2K) 454, and trans. I am collecting parts for a rebuilt rear with a Detroit Locker and 3.42 gears.
I got it painted a couple of years ago, but got ripped off, and now must repaint it. I may try it myself, because I do not trust anybody anymore.

| It is a white plastic "box" on the top or side of the convenience center, located to the left of the steering column. It has two connectors, and is held on by two small tree type fasteners.
Be careful removing the access panel, it is easy to break the tabs on the top.
I have a couple of good clusters if the speedo circuit in the cluster is the issue.
My speedo was twitching, and it turned out to be the VSS.
