I have an 86 caprice estate wagon when your at a red light or stopped you can smell a gas smell from in front of you I dont know why I had the fuel pump replaced recently and had valve covers replaced.

Could be an evap line up front that came off or broke. I accidentally did that on my friend's wagon when I did the water pump, what a fume fulled ride home that was Very Happy

Also check all the gas line fittings and make sure they are tight.Could be the line between the fuel pump and carb has split due to its age.
